Pre-Cana

To get me back into reality, I received a large manila envelope in the mail today. It had both my name and my fiance’s name on it, return address being my parish. I figured it was Pre-Cana stuff. On the 13th we went in and did the Pre-Marital Inventory (PMI).

The PMI, for anyone who hasn’t heard of them; is basically a 140 question Scantron-type questionnaire. For the paranoid, it’s not a “you must get X number right to be married in the Church” type of things. The PMIs are sent out, scanned and then returned. The analyzed PMIs are turned over to a registered counselor who then meets with the couples for counseling. The point of the PMIs are to highlight areas of potential dispute, to see what has been talked about and to see what hasn’t.

Unfortunately, with stuff like this there were some questions that were rather ambiguous. A vast majority of the questions seemed to be geared at Catholic/non-Catholic marriages (not in this case!). Our PMIs are out and should be back in a couple of days. It’ll be interesting to see how they come back. G and I agree on a lot of things, but there’s always the things we don’t agree on.

Anyways, in addition to the PMIs we have to attend a weekend long retreat type thingy. Ours is coming up, so the envelope had worksheets for us to do before the retreat. I flipped through them — some of them are personality oriented, other money, one on sex, that sort of thing. They’re packing a lot into these retreats, so it should be a good (exhausting) time had by all.

After it’s all said and done; the paperwork gets sent up to the Cathedral to show that we went through the Pre-Cana requirements. One thing that is highly encouraged is NFP classes. The Cathedral has 8 weeks worth, but since we live 90 minutes away from it, it’s kind of not going to work. Apparently there’s a NFP teacher in the town next door, so hopefully we can get *those* underway. :)

At any rate, time to get ready for my afternoon of classes. Although Spring has sprung and attention spans are shortening. Only six weeks left of class!
