The Universal Church

Greg and I are settled into our temporary housing as best we can. Our apartment is getting closer to completion, at the very least we should be able to buy a new bed with our stimulus refund thingy and at least be doing everything but cooking in it. :) Luckily there is a full kitchen right upstairs, so that’s not really too much of a problem. I think plumbing for the kitchen is also being done today, I could be wrong.

Apart from the actual moving part, I’ve adjusted quite well to our new city. Granted Greg grew up here, so there wasn’t much adjusting for him to do. I spent six years in the University Town, two years in Wyoming, and 18 in my hometown. I have some relatives who live in this city, which is nice as the potential to see them more regularly is obvious.

Greg and I became official registered members of the Cathedral when we did the Baptism prep class. He’s been registered with his folks, but now we’re registered as a family. :> There wasn’t a lot of drama or sadness moving from my parish in the University Town to this parish ninety miles away. The building has changed, the priests have changed, but the Mass is the same (different homilies, obviously) and the teachings are the same. I think that’s one of the greatest things about the Church, is her universality. I can go anywhere in the world and go to Mass, and be apart of the same Mass that has been happening through time and will happen until the end of the world. Even if I don’t understand the language it’s being celebrated in, I know what is happening. Most importantly, it’s the same Christ that I receive each week.

Since it is the same Jesus that I receive here that I did in the University Town or elsewhere, I never really left my University Parish. We are all a family in Christ and what better way to express our family-ness than partaking in the same meal on Sundays and during daily Mass? True I don’t see the people from University Parish as frequently than if I went there, but I am being supported by their prayers and I am supporting them with their prayers. Moving has really helped me see, experience, and understand “community” deeper. One need not be in the same geographical location to be apart of the community. If that makes sense.

Next year Greg, myself, Elise and some of Greg’s immediate family will be traveling to New York for his brother’s graduation. This will take a while since we’ll be driving. But rest assured, even in New York when we attend Mass, we will be attending Mass with everyone there, everyone in the University Parish, the Cathedral Parish, and so on. And of course, the entire Heavenly Court is also present. Deo gratias!

I also love how God can teach me stuff in the most normal events of my life. :)
