Surgery scheduled

Tuesday was our appointment with The Neurosurgeon for Greg to have an MRI done to help figure out what is going on. It turns out there has been some damage to his dura mater, which is another sign of over-drainage. The Neurosurgeon wants Greg to have a trial run without his shunt – he thinks that some of his ventricles may have come back into function. The Neurosurgeon decided it would be best to tie off his shunt via the tube in Greg’s chest, that way if he needs the shunt they will have “easy access” to treat the resulting hydrocephalus while determining the next appropriate route (most likely replacement into a programmable shunt). If Greg doesn’t need a shunt; we would go back at a later date and get as much removed that can be removed safely.
We scheduled Greg’s “let’s see if you need a shunt!” surgery for the beginning of August – The Neurosurgeon’s first available surgery slot. Remarkably soon, considering it’s not an emergency surgery.
So that’s where we’re sitting with Greg and the shunt. We’re not done yet, since Greg desperately needs angiogram but that’s coming once we get the shunt taken care of.
